L'Oreal HIP Jelly Balms & Blogger Integrity

L'Oreal HIP Jelly Balm
This is a product I have not seen in the UK.. at least not in the drugstores near me. I wanted to try the Jelly Balms as I love my limited edition MAC Tendertones but am scared of them running out. I had read that these were the same type of product (they aren't but ill discuss that later) so I asked my mum in the US to send me some.
Not bad but a bit underwhelming! They smell pleasant, feel non-sticky and deposit a nice wash of color. They are also a great size to slip in a handbag. Because of the twist lid they wont open like a metal tin may. As for smell/flavour they smell faintly of artificial vanilla but don't taste of anything. The consistency is a bit heavy on the lips, not as lightweight as I was expecting. I do find the glass packaging a bit heavy for such a small amount of product. I wont re-buy as I think there are better products out there.. but that being said they are a pleasant product.

Blogging Integrity/Comparisons
As a bloggers I feel its our responsibility to be honest. One of the few things that annoys me about the blogging world is the amount of inaccurate or gratuitous reviews I read. There are times I have read someones criticism of a product written before the product has even been opened!! I also find that some reviewers are praising products that suit their budget.. essentially working on a basis of praising affordability instead of quality. I also find that people use the word 'dupe' too often without defining how exactly the products are similar and how they are not.

In this case, what I dislike is how often the HIP are reviewed as dupes for the MAC Tendertones. The majority of people who make this comparison often say that these are superior (mostly for a price perspective.)
Just because they come in a glass pot doesn't make them comparable products!!
They aren't even similar! Not by formula, not by consistency, not by flavour, not by pigmentation, not even by color selection. They are completely different products!
The product is much harder to the touch (even when warmed up and spread on lips) and a entirely different, harder type of gel-balm consistency. Not even close if you understand anything about make-up. Because of the totally different formula they didn't feel as soft/silky on the lips. They don't contain spf like the Tendertones or have any long lasting moisturising qualities (in fact I found my lips to be dryer after using them.) They are shimmerless and more pigmented but smell quite chemical in comparison to the faint, fruity sweetness of the Tendertones. The only thing similar (and its not actually visually similar) is the glass pot.
AND I'm sorry.. if you still insist on comparing them.. MAC wins hands down!!

The word 'dupe' (duplicate) should imply an almost identical formula, unless you are referring purely to color. In that case you should state that the color is a 'dupe' and not the product (texture, size, finish etc..) itself. As bloggers it is our obligation to disclose accurate information, so that people who make purchases based on the reviews they read (like I did in this case) are not mislead.

Have you ever read a review that was so inaccurate it made you want to scream? Or have you ever come across reviews written by someone who is clearly biased towards a certain brand?

  1. I agree about the dupe thing I have bought things thinking they were going to be a dupe and they have turned out nothing like the original, it leaves me a bit annoyed to be honest!

  2. Ha, yes I have read some bad reviews and then politely corrected a few huge mistakes!! It's not great to completely mislead readers.

I havent tried any of the Hip range, but these look useable. I dont like gloss in jars to be too sold or hard. It's a pain putting it on if its too soft and you dont have a brush!!

I rate your reviews though ;)

  3. I try to be as accurate and informative as I can in my blog reviews. Really hope not to be misleading for my few readers :s

I will do P5P with you if you welcome me on board. But I will make a break for the IMATS event if I manage to find a not too expensive trip :). Maybe I'll see you there, it will be fun :)

  4. I'll do the project 10 pan in a month or so ^^.

I have never came across such an innacurate review,... For some reason the stuff I buy has no real dupes, lol :O
Oh and when it comes to a brand, I know how it is.. I love essence, but it has some bad quality stuff in their line.. xD

The lip balms, look pretty but I don't really like glass containers, as they are quite heavy (and I am clumsy).

  5. I have just finished Project 5 Pan, Round One! I will do a blog post on it tomorrow :) I plan to get a few bits & bobs and start Round 2 as soon as! Quite satisfyingly fun actually :)

  6. Great post Tali. I agree just because a product looks the same, it's down to the actual product formulation rather than packaging that makes it a "dupe". I really respect your views on products because you have taste and really do only rate excellent products. Good luck on P10P, I will be joining you! xx

  7. I have Delectable and Plush (in fact, I went through one Plush all ready). To me they smell a bit like caramel. I usually wear lip blam with SPF underneath with them (I do with all my lip products). They're thick, but I use them a lot in the weather that I've been experiencing the last few weeks. They don't dry out when I go out when it's bitterly windy like my other lipglosses.

I'm allergic to products with flavor so these work for me. I've never tried MAC but I use Plush when I want a little bit of color and Delectable when I want a glossy, sheer red. I have really pigmented lips so these provide the little bit of color I need. I prefer Stila now that I've tried their lip glazes, but I still use the HiP. I guess it depends who you are.

Oh boy, I'm so finicky I'd never be able to do a Project 10 or 5. Does it help that I haven't bought anything make-up related since my Benefit stuff came in last week?

  8. Great post! :)

There are plenty of "not so accurate" reviews on LUSH products IMO. I tried the most part of my LUSH stuff before the whole hype and "reviews boom", but also bought a couple of things after that based on reviews only. The majority of the stuff was a huge fail for me and I'm really amused how much my experience differed/differs from what I read. :/ I don't like reading the "wows" only ("amazing smell!", "so delicious!", etc), I want to read "pros&cons" and how the product actually works. :)

As for the PxP (loved the name :) ) I am just trying to buy what I really need, not what I really want. lol

PS I'm on a quest of finding a decent mascara, because my HG mascara Maybelline Lash stylist is being discontinued. Bought several mascaras after reading tones of reviews. And guess what? They just didn't work for me (L'Oreal Volumissime, L'Oreal Telescopic Explosion, Cover Girl Lashblast, Barry M 3-in-1, Maybelline Colossal included)! I guess I'm different. lol Or I got spoiled products (majority survived the flight before reaching me).:/

  9. Thank you for your conscientious blogging! It is appreciated.

I have an ongoing pan-project with things like powder, foundation and mascara, which I try to never have more than two of at a time. I love the idea of having a small, choice collection of products that are perfect for me, so PxP is appealing. Lipsticks and blushes are on top of my elimination list. There are just too many!

Oh yeah, and I think it will be a fatastic year for all of us! :-)

  10. Sarah- I have a right mind to email the people who wrote the reviews grrrr

    ComputerGirl- :) thanks hon! lol
one thing I always am is honest. Too honest!!

Une Fille Lambda- Lol im not going to let IMATS tempt me!! Ill leave my cards at home!!

    Tamara- These are quite heavy!!

Shortiee31- It is satisfying huh?! Cant wait to see your round 2!

Jo- Yay!! I have someone to do it with me! :)) Glad you agree about the dupe thing.. its so annoying!!

Kate- Well as you didnt buy anything else.. techincally your doing really well ;) Stila has great lip glazes. I prefer them to a lot of other glosses!!

HeavenNRJ- Glad you like the post!!
Mascaras do dry out when they are shipped via air.. but its also because a lot are ovverrated. All the ones you mentioned also didnt work for me!!!! I think we must have similar expectations from products!

  11. NataschaO- Im sure 2010 has something special about it.. i just feeel it in my bones!
I like your rule. I think in future (apart from my kit) for my personal collection ill do that. The only problem is I travel so much my skin color is always changing. So i have 5 open tinted moisturizers! :/

  12. I agree with you on clearly biased reviews, especially on Youtube before the whole FTC craze! I have seen many beauty gurus review products that were sent to them, and it was obvious that it wasn't a completely honest review. But, as bloggers, I think it is difficult because ultimately, it is all opinion based. Just because I rave about something does not necessarily mean that it will work for someone else. But Honesty is very important!

  13. I actually LOVE these, but I have never tried the tender tones..you got really pretty colors.Yes I agree with the not spending so much money anymore...it is a new year and I really need to save!! :X

  14. I'm in :) there are some things I have my eye on for spring...so hopefully I'll finish before summer lol. Knowing me, I'll be doing this into next year!

I agree with the fact that some ppl claim things better just because they're cheaper. I feel like you can spot those reviews a mile away--and I agree...the HiP glosses are much harder to the touch. They also don't give as much color.

    Here's to 2010! xox

  15. You're right, Tali, in my experience most 'dupes' are very rarely the same thing, usually just the idea/packaging matches the original product and that's it. What most irritates me about some blogs is the fact that every single review posted is of a product that was sent to be reviewed... It just gets so mundane and lacks any passion for finding true gems. xxx

    ReplyDelete
  16. I totally agree about the review stuff, especially because I have bought a lipstick because of a review, and the consistency was awful (something that wasn't mentioned).

About the project Xpan, I think it is an excellent idea, I think that, there are certain products, that we don't need to have that much and keep buying and buying....

And ohh, you know that you will do a post on the Sephora goodies, right? LOL xoxo :)

  17. Beautygirl24- I agree.. it is hard. but the honesty thing is the important part and I feel the reviews I have read for these HIP balms were total bull!! lol makes me so mad!

Aleksis- Saveing is the way to go! But it is so hard to do :/

Fantastic- I have a feeling this time we'll be pretty fast. Now we tried before we will know what to do and how to target weak items lol!

Rocaille- I know! I feel like they are too scared to tell the truth. ANY publicity is good publicity so the brands wont mind if they are more honest!

Cherries In Syrup- Of course ill do a post ;) Just trying out my new things!! Will be a nice post as pretty items! :)

    xoxo

  18. i think many people use the word dupe to descirbe as colour similarity, not the quality. i'd say the same thing but point out that the texture isn't the same and etc. i think in terms of eye shadow alone, it is texture that comes first then only colours. in terms of foundation, it is sensitivity then colouring then durability (on the skin). we have way too many bloggers now so as readers we can only judge how they suit our needs carefully.

many bloggers don't have the budget to buy high end makeup all the time and thus they tend to review more drugstore items, which is good as more people can access to. i for one, think that regardles high or low, there are treasure to be found and shouldn't be excluded either way. there are tons of crap high end stuff i have tried too. what pissed me off the most is when some bloggers are given freebies to test, they don't express honest opinions then readers can be misread. Whether or not it's a paid review, it should be a TRUE review without bias.

    Just my two cents.

    ReplyDelete
  19. jojoba- I agree 100% what you wrote! I like the way you write your reviews for example because you cover every aspect of the product. So many people dont!

Maybe I didnt communicate my point well. I have seen bloggers.. on purpose write bad reviews for brands like MAC and good ones for a drugstore brand.... ONLY based on price. They forget to mention anything about the quality of the product! :/ Thats what annoys me.. 'its $6.20 so its AMAZING best product ever!' is not a review in my oppinion!

  20. i cannot agree more with you on the HIP jelly balm's. i bought 2 when they first came out. i was completely disappointed and gave them to my sister.

i'm glad you approved the integrity of bloggers subject. i find it really really hard to enjoy reading a blog where a person either: a) does a review after using a product for ONE day b) was given a lot of products for free and raves about all of them. i turn to ur blog for thorough and honest reviews. i like when u tell us texture, scent, price, etc etc. thats important to me.

  21. JamieRebecca- So glad someone agrees on the balms thing! Its so frustrating how they were hyped up!!
Even when i get free things or discounts im brutally honest! lol.. noone scares me into lying :P

  22. thankyou for this review! I've read countless times how these are a dupe for tendertones, and now I know they aren't!

    ReplyDelete
  23. thanks for clearing that up. I kinda like the HiP Jelly Balms, but it's good to know they aren't dupes. Maybe they are more like the korres lip butters? Do you know?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Stephanie- Korres lip butters are totally different. Almost creamy! Pigmented.. each one has a different scent. Some are milky some are clear.. http://theglossgoss.blogspot.com/2009/08/korres-color-range-review.html here is a post i did with the two new flavours. Some pictures so you see them!

em- lol deff not!! :/ grrrr

  25. Such a good post! I haven't read this angle on blogger integrity in any other blog -- which is why I love reading yours.

I like your point on dupes -- and the reminder on what the word means (duplicate).

As for blogger honest, it's something we should all strive for regardless if it's a product you were sent or one you bought. I strive to do balanced reviews unless the product completely sucks in which I will trash it. My challenge sometimes with reviews is time -- wish I could spend time writing more and doing a really thorough review but in many instances it's 'stream of consciousness' writing so I'm writing what comes to mind at that point. Ok I"m rambling! You've given me a lot to ponder Tali!

  27. Some reviews do annoy me because people say something but don't back it up with why they think that's so. I don't fully agree on the inaccurate part of reviews because some things work for some people but not for others. For example, the Revlon DoubleTwist worked for me after I tweaked it a bit but nobody else liked it.

Re. Project 10 Pan, I've been doing this for ages and it makes such a difference to how much space you have and how much money you spend. I'm doing it more for skincare/haircare and that's going great.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Great post Tali! As far as reviews are concerned I believe that the best way to review a product would be to test it on a few people. Or at least, to describe your skin type, tone etc so that the reader will know if the product will have a similar effect on her. I think that skin type is very often left out of the conversation, although it is a very important parameter. For instance, I got Benefit's Coralista after reading rave raviews about it and it turned out that it's terrible on my oily skin (with enlarged pores)! For me it's ok because I will use it on other people, but for someone (with a skin like mine) who is not a MUA it would be a waste of money.
I like it that when you write a review about an eyeshadow for instance you say that it would go well on a fair skin or an olive skin like yours etc. What works for ourselves doesn't mean that it works for everyone else also and vice versa.
As for project x pan I have a question: will you also stop buying stuff for your kit or you are only reffering to your personal items?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Lipstick Rules- So glad you like the post!
Your reviews are always so blanced thats a reason i read your blog. I wish more were like you!

    Fantastic- uhuh.. good tactics missy!!

Rhamnousia- pxp is great for giving to extra spending money! lol I never realised how much make-up costs £10 here.. $30 here and all together its $$$$$$!! :/

Pasiphae- I know! People often to forget to mention their skin type etc.. so the products doesnt end up working on you! :/ So annoying!!
as for pxp BOTH. I need to stop spending money and i know my kit is ok as it is. I dont need more stuff for it even though im sure i could find things easily! lol UGH why is mae-up so expensive :/

    xxox

  30. tali: I meant MISLED. LOL

i understand what you mean now. thanks for clearing that up for me. :)

that kind of review is NOT a review at al.

  31. Great points Tali mou!
Yeah, the "dupe" word is used waaaay too much...
I 've found myself thinking "what, that's no dupe from your picture, r u kidding me", even if it's supposed to be only a dupe for the colour... lol!

And as far as integrity goes, I think even by the look of one's blog, it's pretty obvious...
What I hate is that even the big gurus have been occasionally... "sold" I guess would be the proper word... and yet many still refuse to see that, only because they are very well known.
Oh well, I think that the honest bloggers/YTers WILL show in the end, like you! ;)

Ah, PxPan... nope... count me out ladies... and let me explain: I 'm only 1 year into makeup, my products are all nice and fresh, lol, not to mention most are ...intact *whistles*! It would take me aaaaages to finish any up, not to mention, I 'd run like crazy to get backups when I 'd be done... (failed Project b4 it's start)! Lol! :)

  32. Hi Tali, I'm sure you've heard this enough already, but I love your blog! It's so refreshingly different from all the countless beauty blogs I've read.

I was appalled by the Beauty Snob blog a while back, when they posted a review on an extremely expensive moisturizer with supposed magnetic properties and claimed how they are beneficial. I tried to leave a comment questioning the science of the claims (with an article to back it up) and it was never posted! My comment wasn't rude, negative or inappropriate in any way, as far as I could see. I tracked the comments that were posted, and it was all from a bunch of people saying how 'cool' they thought this product was, and they wanted to try it out themselves. Little did they know they'd be wasting their money...

  33. i'm going to go for project 10 'small' pans, so smaller sized items can be included, i think thi will ease me in gently! Good luck! Elle x

  34. i just discovered L'Oreal HIP jelly balms and they are discontinued so I have been buying what I can online. I love this product. I have to state that I have not tried MAC Tendertones & will go try it at the makeup counter this summer if there are any but I disagree about the HIP jelly balms being "hard". I use a lip brush with mine and the hard jelly balm just melts when my lip brush is applied to the jar. It then spreads easily on my lips. I love the feel of it on my lips and the balm feeling yet slight but buildable color it offers and perfect gloss (not too shiny/not too dull). I also like that there is hardly any scent to the HIP jelly balms. They are also very moisturizing for me and I notice my lips are still moisturized after the balm is removed by eating or drinking. I also love the pigmentation that I have read online is much more than the MAC Tendertones has. Just wanted to comment in case there are others who see this site and think they don't want to try L'Oreal lip balms after reading this review. Some will prefer MAC Tendertones. Some will prefer L'Oreal balms or other similar products out there. They definitely aren't dupes so you're right about that but I think those other reviews can help others who want MAC Tendertones but can't afford them to find a sort of similar product. I came across such a review that helped me find a much cheaper "dupe" for Urban Decay's Naked palettes. I'd love to buy just high-end makeup products but have realized I will be buying as many cheap "dupes" or just plain, cheap but good makeup products as I can and use the $ saved for other shopping.
